The NSB Organic Act and the Act of National Intelligence Work charge the Bureau with the missions as follows:

 

1. Taking Care of Security Intelligence Work:

    The Bureau is empowered to handle matters of international intelligence, intelligence about Chinese mainland area, intelligence about Taiwan area, analysis of national strategic intelligence, sci-tech intelligence and communications security. As long as the national security intelligence is concerned, the Bureau is also responsible for providing direction, coordination and support to the following Agencies: Military Defense Bureau, Communications Development Office, General Political Warfare Bureau and Military Police Command under the MND; Coast Guard Administration under the Execution Yuan; National Police Administration under the Ministry of Interior; Investigation Bureau under the Ministry of Justice.

    Through the general coordination meeting of national intelligence and its separate sub-meetings, intelligence requirements put forward by respective organs are fully discussed before concerted effort can be made in aid of information collection and analysis. In response to the changing situations at home and abroad or across the Taiwan Strait, NSB sees it fit to give advice and guidance to other responsible agencies, so as to facilitate their collection of relevant information. Obtained information that are crucial to national security and welfare will be carefully assessed and analyzed before becoming officially classified documents for the reference of policy-makers at various levels.

2. Planning and Execution of Special Tasks:

    As provided for in the NSB Organic Act and the Presidential and Vice Presidential Election and Recall Act, a Special Service Center was set up within the NSB to coordinate with other competent authorities for giving protection to president, vice president, their families, former presidents and vice president, other designated individuals, and candidates for presidency and vice presidency.

 

3. Overall Planning of Code Control and Research:

    In addition to the code research & development, NSB is authorized to play a decisive role in taking control over the ciphered codes used or to be used by different government organizations. Through the mechanism of control and consolidation, a tightly knit network for safe communications and liaison can be built up to help attain the objectives of national administration.
